More Than a Badge: Plymouth Police Chief John Weir Connects with MSDC Participants

Coffee & Community brings local leaders and the people we serve together for meaningful conversations.

What happens when you call 911? How do police officers find someone who is missing? What is the hardest part of keeping Plymouth safe?

These are just a few of the questions our participants had when Plymouth Police Chief John Weir joined us at Marshall-Starke Development Center (MSDC) for a recent Coffee & Community gathering.

And these weren't just questions about police work. They were opportunities to learn, build understanding, and connect with someone who plays an important role in our community.

Getting to Know the Person Behind the Badge

Chief Weir spent time with our participants, shared what he does as Plymouth's Chief of Police, and brought along some Plymouth Police Department merchandise.

But what made the visit especially meaningful was the conversation that followed.

Our participants had the opportunity to ask questions about real situations police officers face every day.

They wanted to know what happens when someone gets arrested, how officers handle disagreements, what tools they use to solve crimes, and whether they can ask an officer for help even when there isn't an emergency.

They also asked an especially important question:

"How do you help people with disabilities?"

It's a question that reminds us why conversations like these matter.

Building Connections That Go Both Ways

At MSDC, we believe community inclusion is about more than being present in the community. It's about having opportunities to participate, ask questions, build relationships, and be heard.

For our participants, meeting someone like Chief Weir creates an opportunity to learn more about the people and services around them.

It also gives community leaders an opportunity to spend time with the individuals we serve, hear their questions, and better understand their interests and perspectives.

These connections help build a community where everyone has a place and a voice.

The Power of Coffee & Community

Coffee & Community is one of the ways MSDC brings people together.

There are no complicated presentations or formal expectations. Just conversations, curiosity, and opportunities to learn from one another.

Whether our guests are business owners, first responders, artists, educators, or people with interesting hobbies, each visit introduces our participants to something new.

Sometimes the most meaningful connections begin with a simple question.

Thank You, Chief Weir!

We sincerely thank Chief John Weir and the Plymouth Police Department for taking the time to visit MSDC, share their experiences, and answer our participants' questions.

Your willingness to show up, listen, and connect helps strengthen the relationship between the people we serve and the community we all share.

Our Community Has So Much to Share. We'd Love to Hear from You!

Do you own a local business? Have an interesting career, skill, or hobby? Are you part of an organization that makes a difference in our community?

Our participants are curious, eager to learn, and always excited to meet new people.

We would love to invite you to be part of an upcoming Coffee & Community gathering.

You don't need a formal presentation. Just bring your experiences, your interests, and a willingness to connect.
